Choosing The Best Resort For A Great Vacation

The success of your vacation depends a fair bit on having chosen a suitable resort. If you like being close to the action, you should select a hotel property close to a major city where clubs stay open all night. However, if your ideal holiday involves seclusion, then a quieter spot would be ideal.

It requires research to get a good match for the way you like things to unfold. You need to check that the hotel puts on the sort of events that interest you. Some of the common offerings at resorts include sports involving water, games that are silly but fun, and nightly shows where local singers and dancers perform for you.

The resort’s approach to guest participation is also a factor to consider. In some places, staff will urge you over and over to join their organized activities. This is great for people who like to dabble in different events on a daily basis. However, if this sounds like too much for you, it would be wise to choose a place known to be more relaxed.

There are different dining options too. There are benefits to paying one lump sum to have all meals included, because you know in advance what the price is. However, this approach may not satisfy some adventure-seekers. They may find this idea too limiting because they would rather try out different restaurants wherever they go.

Rules on dressing may differ from one spot to the next, and you should be aware of requirements at your chosen destination. Hotels that offer fine dining may require a certain level of formality, including the correct footwear. People who go to this sort of place must pack accordingly. However, relaxed attire is deemed acceptable most of the time at many hotel properties, although they usually insist that bathing suits be covered in dining areas.

One definite necessity is to spend time before your trip investigating the type of identity papers you will need to take with you to ensure smooth transitions on the way to and from your foreign destination. A traveler who lacks the proper documents may be turned away at customs. That would be a horrible experience, and you can avoid it by having your papers organized before you go. Lists are good reminders that can help avert trouble.

Many destination properties will exchange currencies for you at the front desk, but it is a good idea to take some foreign money with you in small denominations. You can use this for tips when you first arrive. It will also come in handy for buying snacks at the airport before you board the transportation that is taking you to the hotel, especially if the timing of your arrival is in between regular mealtimes. You don’t want to start your holiday by being cranky from hunger.

Additional advice is to enjoy all that your vacation has to offer, but to do so in moderation. This applies not only to alcohol consumption, but also to sun exposure. It’s also wise to observe the resort’s safety recommendations on such matters as where to swim and whether to drink the local water. Finally, oversee all activities that your children take part in when they are playing by the pool or near the ocean.

Spend your next vacation or a business trip in the beautiful Collingwood area at Mountain Springs Resort. With plenty of things to do, you are bound to have fun and relaxation. Stay in a cozy chalet and have your next meeting at our Blue Mountain Conference Centre.

Enjoy the sun while yo can

Before going on a ski holiday, you should give the type of ski accommodation you will be staying in more than just a passing thought. Where you stay during your vacation will have a huge effect on how much you enjoy yourself in the end.

Before you even book the accommodation, you should carefully consider which ski resort to go to in the first place. One thing that’s quite important is this: during any ski holiday there will be days that you can’t ski, mostly because of the weather. The resort that you go to should therefore be developed enough to keep you busy during those days. There should be sufficient alternatives to skiing in other words.

In this regard there are ski resorts and ski resorts. Well developed resorts have a plethora of things to do in the immediate vicinity. Very often you will have a quaint little town nearby with lots of interesting shops and restaurants. At night you can therefore mingle with other skiers and talk about what happened during the day.

The other type of resort, which you tend to find more in developing countries than elsewhere, provides a ski-only experience. There will be facilities like ski-lifts and a handful of hotels and guest houses, but not a lot more. Unless you plan to ski around the clock, you might find this kind of resort very boring in the end. It’s fine to go there for a quick day’s skiing, but to spend two or three weeks there is really only for the hardened nature lover.

The well-developed resorts usually have a plethora of accommodation options. For the well-to-do there are always the 5-star and boutique hotels. This type of establishment often provides facilities like hot tubs, heated swimming pools, gyms, saunas, business centers and a mini shopping mall. You will find a number of international restaurants on the premises as well. In short: you only need to leave the hotel to ski.

Mid-range hotels provide a home from home for the bulk of middle class skiers. They offer perfectly acceptable accommodation to fit the budget of the average guy in the street. Facilities that you are likely to find here are private bathrooms, televisions, perhaps a small refrigerator and a kettle so you can make your own coffee or tea.

The majority of ski resorts offer self-catering establishments in the immediate vicinity. This is the best solution by far for the family man. Not only will it save money on the cost of the accommodation, but you will also be able to prepare your meals in your own little kitchen, thereby saving a fortune on eating out.

An all-time favorite when it comes to ski accommodation is of course the guest house. This is the perfect option for people who like to make new friends. Many new friendships have indeed blossomed around the breakfast table of a guest house. They normally provide great value for money and the better ones can be compared to the best of hotels.

Autumn Snow Brings 2008 Ski Season Hope

Ski Holidays
by Eerko

The summer weather in northern Europe was a strange mix, with different countries experiencing greatly differing weather patterns.

In southern Europe Mediterranean countries such as Greece saw temperatures soar over the hundred farenheit mark, while in Britain floods caused misery for hundreds of thousands of people.

The floods affected large parts of England and claimed four lives, and left a hundred thousand homes without water for two weeks in parts of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

Insurance companies warned that the floods will cost small businesses millions, and insurers are paying out tens of millions in claims from homeowners. The British government offered emergency aid to the worst affected areas to help with the cost of the clear-up. Yorkshire in the north of England saw some of the heaviest flooding, with thousands of homes left without power and three people dying.

But extreme weather, with snow in July and October, was a welcome sight in Austria and the French Pyrenees, and Andorra in particular which had little snow in their usual ski season of December to April, bringing hope that this winter will see a good level of snow.

Andorra is a ski country and a well known tax haven, and traditionally the year gets off to a flying start with many serious skiers looking for a holiday home buying an apartment or house.

But the early part of 2007 proved to be different, with the worst snow falls for twenty years and a distinct lack of tourists who would normally be considering whether to buy a ski apartment.

Andorra has invested heavily in new infrastructure and facilities for the ski tourist in recent years, which would make a second successive poor season particularly hard to bear for the country’s ski tourist industry,if there is a lack of snow for the 2007-8 season as well.

Last year Andorra opened a new family friendly ski park in Arinsal, moving away from her old image of a cheap and cheerful ski holiday for 18-30 year olds to one that caters well for all. The snow park includes a conveyor belt and a game zone, designed to give children confidence before they ski and use the chair lifts.

Andorra is fortunate compared to many regions where ski holidays are an important part of the economy, as it is also a tax haven, second only to Monaco in Europe for popularity, and equal in tax benefits.

As well as attracting new residents with high net wealth who contribute to Andorra’s economy while in residence with their spending power, Andorra has a good banking system that provides good employment prospects.

To obtain residency in Andorra, applications need to be submitted in Catalan. A notarised copy of the applicants passport, birth certificate and a certificate of good conduct from the home country are submitted at the same time. Residency normally takes between three and six months to be approved.

Once residency is granted, residents are supposed to spend six months a year in Andorra, but this isn’t policed.

While the snow would often start in early November before this ski season, disastrously no sustained snow periods arrived until March this year.

No official figures have been released yet as to how many tourists visited this year, but some officials are reported to be guessing at a year on year fall of ten per cent. Private businesses suggest the figure could be closer to forty per cent. Given that private businesses see financial figures on a daily basis most people in the Andorra tourist industry are veering towards the higher forty per cent figure rather than what could be an optimistic official estimate.

Despite good snow in mid March and full occupancy at Easter, it was decided not to prolong the agony of Andorra’s worst tourist season for a generation, and the slopes were closed at the end of the Easter holidays, some three weeks earlier than some previous ski seasons.

Andorra has come a long way since the mid eighties when most ski tourists were under the age of twenty five and looking for a cheap ski holiday. With investment in hotels and in the ski slopes Andorra now competes on level terms with other European ski resorts. But unless Europe’s weather returns to the famaliar pattern of recent decades, all the investment Andorra has made in ski tourism could be for nothing.

A Weekend Ski Break

If you have used up all your holiday time from work, but you want to make the most of what’s left of the ski season, then a weekend ski holiday could be just what you need. It may seem like a lot of hassle and expense for the sake of just a couple of days, but if planned correctly then there is no better way to spend a weekend.

Careful planning is the key to a successful weekend of skiing. But it needn’t be time consuming or stressful to organise. By taking just a few things into consideration then you avoid the risk of wasting time unnecessarily. And when you only have a couple of days to play with, time is most definitely something you cannot afford to waste.

• With weekend ski holidays time is of the essence, so it’s important to cut down on journey times. This means scrapping the resorts that are too far away from the Alpine airports. Fitting ski holidays into weekend will be putting your time management skills to the test so the last thing you need is a two hour journey time from the airport. So remember to pick a ski resort with short transfer times.

• Avoiding timing ski holidays to coincide with peak holiday times, such as New Year or half term. Hotels will be busy at this time and therefore they probably won’t be interested in letting a room for any less than a week.

• Smaller ski resorts are more suited to short ski breaks. If you only plan to stay for only a couple of days, then you won’t be needing hundreds of miles of piste to keep you occupied. So definitely think about going for the smaller ski resorts. They’re also less likely to be heavily-booked and they will also be cheaper than the larger more popular resorts.

• Try to avoid flying out on a Friday night and returning on a Sunday night. These are the days when flights are at their most expensive.

Top Ski Resorts For Beginner Skiers

Lunch with Goulash soup and a Germknudel

Skiing for the first time is both an exciting and challenging event, the thought of getting your adrenaline flowing by sliding down large mountains makes you feel like you are about to experience something that will give you lasting memories. One thing that people do need to be mindful of is where the best beginner ski holidays are, as not all ski resorts accommodate for inexperienced or beginner skiers.
Places like Meribel, Val d’Isere, Chamonix and Engelberg are extremely popular amongst professional and expert skiers, however, it would make for an unsuitable destination for beginners. Ski holidays in certain destinations will cater for those with very little or no knowledge of skiing, as they usually have smoother slopes that are not all filled with experienced skiers. One thing that will put off any first time skier is watching the number of pro skiers slide down the slopes at full speed.
Ski holidays in places like Chamonix attract many people and contain a lot of challenging mountainous slopes and jumps. The first place that would be top on the beginners ski resorts is Villars in Switzerland. During peak seasons, this can be extremely busy and difficult to begin skiing lessons at; therefore, it is better to go during a quiet period and avoiding weekends. Learner terrains are ideal with great mountainous views and virtually no distractions from the hustle and bustle of pro skiers.
The next resort to consider is Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy, whereby the ski slopes are free from other skiers and have clear and smooth runways. All of the mountainous areas have a reasonable and comfortable altitude, all of which are good for making progress on. This is a popular destination so it is worth going at its quietest period if you are keen on going just to learn. The summer period sees Cortina turn into a relaxing and breathtaking spot for hiking and impressive sightseeing activity.
The final place to consider is Beaver Creek of the USA. This is ideal for first-time snowboarders and beginner skiers as it offers a separate beginners centre where learners can gain an insight into their upcoming skiing experience. Their previews include a video instruction and lesson about skiing, loading and uploading on lifts, and then a final question and answer session before venturing out onto the snow. This allows the student to understand the basic procedures before joining in on the practical sessions.
You will also get a chance to ski down slopes and trails such as Red Buffalo and Booth Gardens, all designed for beginner trails. One ideal place for honing your skills is the Buckaroo Bowl that allows instructors to help learners use the edges of their skis and speeding up the learning process of various skiing techniques. Ski holidays here do tend to be on the expensive side and is a very classy place to spend your winter period.
When choosing a beginners ski holiday destination, you should always look into the facilities that they offer as well as looking into when is the best season to start learning. Find out how much the extra tuition is and always get a clear idea on the lesson itinerary. Most importantly always purchase travel insurance, just to be on the safe side.

Should I choose a self-catered or catered option for my winter skiing holidays in euro-land? There really is no question!

Initially I thought, as I think most of us would, that going self-catered was the only answer for a much needed credit crunch winter ski holiday, we can surf the net, choose a nice chalet, drive down to the alps with our friends and have a great skiing holiday.

Lets look at the facts: Our requirements were, a large luxury chalet for 10 people, 5 bedrooms each with en-suite bathroom plus garden hot–tub, for the week commencing 06 Feb 2010.

First I looked at a self-catered chalet as above, in the mountain resort of Chatel, in the Porte’s du Soleil ski area of France. Price was 4500 euro for the chalet for 7 days accommodation, not a bad price of 450 euro per person for top quality accommodation in a peak week.

Next, identical accommodation requirements, in the same resort, but a catered chalet holiday. The price for this came in at 7300 euro, wow, that’s a lot, but is it? Lets break it down….

Self-catered option was 450 euro per person per week

Catered option was 730 euro per person

A difference of 280 euro per person per week, divide this by 7 days and we get 40 euro per person per day difference.

What do we get for 40 euro per day? We get picked up from the airport in a private minibus, taken to the ski hire shop en-route to our chalet, pre dinner drinks and canapés are served in front of a roaring log fire before freshly prepared 3 course dinners with a range of complimentary fine wines, add to this breakfasts, afternoon teas, minibus shuttle services to and from the ski slopes and village plus daily cleaning and generally being well looked after… for 40 euro a day, No driving, no carrying skis, no shopping, no cooking, no washing up, no expensive restaurants, the list goes on.

There really is only one option.

How to Get Your Ski Accommodation Right

Ski Holidays
by Eerko

Thankfully, due to the incredible selection of skiing holidays now available, you don’t have to look too hard to find your very own slice of snowy perfection. And with a huge variety of ski accommodation options to choose from, from hotels and hostels to bed and breakfast, from self-catering apartments and chalets to spa hotels and enormous ski-in, ski-out resorts, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding where you want to lay your weary bones after a hard days skiing.

Ski Resorts

When you are first considering your ski holiday, get the resort right. Think about your ski level – are you a beginner or a more advanced skier? And off the slopes, what are you looking for? Do you want quality family time? Do you want all night après-ski activities? Or long and lazy pampering spa treatments?

You might want to try more alternative winter activities too – How about trying husky dog sledding? Then look at Whistler. Or heliskiing? Look at Italy’s Selva Val Gardena. And if you are planning on proposing to your loved one on a romantic sleigh ride, then Kitzbuhel in Austria is the resort for you! Offpiste, telemark, snowboarding – whatever it is you want to do, focus first on the resort that can offer you those things. After that, you can get down to the knitty gritty of accommodation choices.

Ski Chalets

Good high end ski companies often have different levels of chalet accommodation. Scott Dunn, for example, has 23 chalets situated in top resorts such as Courchevel 1850, Val d’Isere, Zermatt and St Anton. The company’s ‘Flagship and Premier’ ski chalets (of which there are 15) are defined by having understated personal service, gourmet food and wine, driver service, REN products, as well as wellness areas or indoor swimming pools.

Ski Hotels

A hotel holiday ticks different boxes. Expect all the normal perks of staying in a hotel – room service, fresh linen daily, extensive wine lists and menus, but remember too that a much larger number of guests means you get more anonymity and sometimes more package/stay flexibility than a chalet too.

Different ski resorts (and different operators) offer different levels of hotel and hotel service. Most resorts now boast a choice of small family run hotels, larger boutique properties, traditional alpine style hotels or more corporate hotels with hi tech business facilities. Again – think about what you want from your ski holiday before you book your ski accommodation.

Nowadays you can even find chalet-hotels, which some people think are the best of both worlds – a hotel that boasts chalet style rooms (a bit like bungalows on a luxury beach holiday), where you can be part of the hotel (with room service and breakfast in bed) but with the individual and privately cosy feel of a chalet too.

Self-Catering

You can of course opt for self-catering too – no chalet staff, no hotel staff, but the freedom to do exactly as you please, when you want to do it. And don’t think self-catering has to be basic and luxury-free either. The Lodge Champeray apartments in Portes du Soleil in the Alps consist of 11 stunning contemporary apartments with private hot tubs, concierge service and meals delivered direct to your door.

Whatever you are looking for, you can be sure your perfect accommodation solution exists. Just do your research first, and use a reputable company too!

Ideal for ski holidays with friends or family, Les Alpages de Val-Cenis is a luxury 4-star complex at the foot of the ski slopes. Its architecture and design is in perfect keeping with the typical Savoyard feel of the village of Lanslebourg. The residence is also accessible for people with reduced mobility. For ski holidays you’ll remember fondly for some time to come!

Wrong Turn For Andorra Skiing?

Ski Holidays

Views from Schlick 2000

In a surprising move that has some left bewildered at the strategy, Andorra has decided that now is the time to market herself as an upmarket European ski holidays destination.

As consumers in Western Europe and the U.S. have cut back on spending for the first time in a long while, many manufacturers are bringing out cheaper versions of popular brands to try to hold on to their customer base.

And in the retail sector in Britain for example leading supermarket chains such as Tesco and Sainsbury’s have promoted their economy ranges in recent months, while before the recession a lot of marketing effort was put into own brand premium goods.

And stores that have always been seen as the top end of the market such as Marks And Spencer along with Waitrose have introduced economy ranges of products for the first time to try and keep their cusomers loyal during the economic downturn.

If ski holiday areas were British retail stores, Waitrose would be the equivalent of Swiss ski holidays.

So why is Andorra trying to change her image from a low cost ski holidays destination to an upmarket one, when everyone else it appears is doing the reverse?

                                       Andorra Flights

Part of the reason could be that Andorra genuinely feels it is no longer a budget ski holiday destination, but can be seen by the skiing fraternity as a serious player having spent millions on improving its infrastructure, and that it also good for a family visit.

And the view that Andorra has moved upmarket by providing better facilities for holidaymakers is certainly true. Soldeu for example, along with Pas de la Casa and Arinsal the main skiing areas, has a very good choice of hotels, ranging from 3 to 5 star, that would not be out of place in any of Europe’s prime ski destination in the Alps and Pyrenees.

In the eighties Andorra was very much a budget destination, and although a bordering country with France it couldn’t compete with French ski holidays. Today it can say Andorra ski site yourandorra.com – and say that the budget destination is now Bulgaria. The millions of Euros invested by Andorra was money well spent, and further upgrading of the country’s infrastructure continues, ensuring that new visitors will consider visiting again in future years, as well as new ones.

Andorra is also a tax haven, and many Andorrans are employed in the banking and Andorra real estate market, and with taxes going up around the world the Andorra property for sale market will benefit, as more people consider taking up Andorra residency. The income tax rate is zero compared to up to 50 per cent in some European countries, hence the attraction of residency in Andorra.

So maybe Andorra, with her strong financial and property markets, considers it can afford to market herself as a prime ski holidays destination in advance of a true economic recovery, putting herself in front of other areas considering doing the same when consumers start spending again, and stealing a march on them. A risky strategy if that is the case as consumers might well be more cautious with their money when things get better, having witnessed the global banking system on the verge of collapse in recent times.

Andorra can only hope that it’s a step ahead of the game, and not misjudged the market entirely.

The type of place you stay in will make a huge contribution to how much you enjoy you ski vacation. You should therefore set aside an hour or two beforehand to carefully think about where you are going to spend your holiday and what type of ski accommodation you prefer.

Before you even book the accommodation, you should carefully consider which ski resort to go to in the first place. One thing that\’s quite important is this: during any ski holiday there will be days that you can\’t ski, mostly because of the weather.

The other type of resort are those that are situated in far-off places where there\’s no nearby town. There might be a couple of hotels and other accommodation establishments and not much more. Unless you plan to ski night and day, this type of resort can quickly get very boring. It\’s fine to go there for a quick day or two\’s skiing, but an extended holiday in a place like this is not really an option.

The better developed resorts normally have a huge variety of accommodation establishment. There are usually more than enough five star hotels to satisfy the influx of the well-heeled who want only the best. Often these hotels have their own shopping centers with boutique stores and a couple of world class restaurants. There will normally also be facilities like saunas and gyms to make sure you stay busy during days that you can\’t ski.

Mid-range hotels absorb the bulk of skiers to these resorts. They mostly provide perfectly adequate accommodation and all the facilities that you can reasonably expect during your holiday. As a minimum you should make sure you get a private bathroom, cable TV and coffee making facilities. A very nice feature is a balcony. A hotel room can become very claustrophobic during an extended stay. The hotel should also not be located too far from where you plan to ski.

You will find self-catering accommodation in or near virtually all the better ski resorts. For the family man these are the perfect solution. They offer a true home from home experience, with kitchens, TV lounges and often even hot tubs. Many of the more upmarket resorts have heated indoor pools and gyms where you can while away non-skiing hours.

As far as ski accommodation is concerned, one should of course never forget the trusted old guest house. This is the most personal of all the options and many friendships have been formed around the breakfast table at one of these establishments. Their prices are more often than not very reasonable and the more upmarket ones provide facilities comparable to the best of hotels.
